More Quotes...The heights by great men reached and kept were not obtained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night It is no use saying, 'We are doing our best.' You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all Get Prepared! When a Zombie outbreak occurs there is barley enough time to figure out what's going on much less prepare for it. What we need is to make this preparation a part of our normal lives. Planning for other unrelated events like hurricanes, floods and the like is a first step. By using these natural events as practice we can work out a plan that will keep us alive no matter what we face. We are going to cover three main points in our discussion. The first is food the second is water and the third shelter. But focusing on these three key elements we have a good strong foundation on which to build everything else. As a side note even preparing for a home invasion or car jacking can come in handy. Those events will thrust us into the same kind of chaos that a horde of zombies would.
The first step is making sure you have enough food to keep you and your family alive for at least seventy two hours if not longer. As far as the type of food goes you can choose from military rations like the ones you can buy at the local army navy store or you can put together everything yourself. Military rations can be very expensive and even though they last forever not everyone is going to want to shell out big money for them. I will cover the do it yourself way since that is what most of us will be doing Using canned goods whenever possible will definitely help since they are cheap and fairly nutritious. They also have liquid that will help meet your daily fluid needs. Use dried foods sparingly as they require the absorption of water. Try and plan on one pot meals like soups and stews. These are nutritious and also easy to deal with in a crisis. Try to stay away from meals that have only carbohydrates in them as they lack the overall nutrition necessary to sustain you for the long haul. Your best bet for protein besides canned beans is dried meat but again try to re-hydrate it in the pot to keep water consumption down. Water will be the most difficult thing on which to plan. Not knowing how much water to have on hand as well as not knowing where you can get water from makes planning very difficult. Water filters such as ones used by backpackers can filter out most impurities. However, they can be a bit slow since you have to pump water from a tube that goes into the filter out through a tube that goes into a container. The process also requires you to be careful of cross contamination. These filters can really be very helpful especially if water is available but not drinkable. There are also tablets and liquids that can purify water but may leave an undesirable after taste. If possible I would look at both a filter and tablets as that would give you the most flexibility. I would figure on two gallons of drinkable water per person per day. Along with that I would have one or two gallons of water for dish and clothes washing. This water is not potable as it will have a small amount of bleach or other disinfectant added to it. Shelter is last on our list but certainly not least. Shelter choices are fairly slim in a disaster but without adequate shelter you run the risk of exposing yourself to the elements or worse the Zombies. Your shelter needs to keep you warm dry and as comfortable as can be expected under the circumstances. In the event you are trying to evade a horde of rampaging zombies or a gang of looters you may also want to select a shelter with few if any windows and only one entrance or exit. Never put yourself in a position where you have to cover more that one field of fire. We'll get to that later. Some shelters can be constructed of man made materials that you might find lying around but for my money an old building or other fortified structure makes more sense. You can see now how planning for unrelated events such as hurricanes or earthquakes can also prepare you for a zombie outbreak. Even if the zombies never come you will have given yourself a boost of confidence by planning and preparing for the things that can happen.
