The AR 15 Franken Rifle

Growing up I loved monster movies. Not the hack and slash flicks like they have today but the old monster movies. I’ll never forget the night I watched the original Frankenstein with Boras Karloff, man I just about @#!*% myself. I was trying not to watch and watching all at the same time. It was about 11:30pm and my favorite host was on, Dr Paul Bearer. Get it Paul Bearer. I still love that shtick! Well my mom was asleep and I was in the living room all by myself. I got to tell you when I saw those broken body pieces come together and stand up I was about scared out of my socks. What a feeling it was when it was all over and I realized it wasn’t that bad.

Well that is about how I felt the day I finished my AR 15 Franken rifle. So why do I refer to my rifle in such a derogatory manner. Well because at the time I built her I was almost broke so I had to piece her together from whatever parts I could find. Now if you’re an AR building purest you might start feeling queasy as you continue to read how my upper and lower weren’t from the same manufacturer. You might even start to feel like puking when I tell you that I found a generic lower kit made up of non matching parts. It’s OK dude, go rinse your mouth and gargle you’ll feel better. Wus! Kidding, just kidding.

Anyway when I came home from my trip to the gun show I had a righteous box of parts. The upper was from a Florida AR manufacturer called Gunsmoke Enterprises and the lower was purchased through a local gun shop and was made by Century. I opted for a carry handle and found a picatinny rail for the handle priced right at $20. I had just sold an old Dan Wesson and had less than $600 left in my pocket. I probably spent less than $550 on the whole build and that includes the upper, lower and the lower kit with the collapsing stock.

So why am I telling you all of this? Because even in this crazy Obamaconamy we still need to know that we can build a functional AR 15 on a tight budget and go to the range and have fun. You see if you’re not caught up on companies and logos and just want an accurate rifle that you could use for target shooting, hunting or defense nothing beats my Franken rifle.

Oh by the way as far as watching scary stuff on TV goes nothing beats the scary crap coming out of the Whitehouse now days. Now that’s downright frightening!
